Preparing your Home for Winter
Winter brings with it cold temperatures, snow, and ice; even in Tennessee! To keep your home comfortable, warm and safe during the winter months, we have a few several things you can do to prepare.
Firstly, check your heating system to ensure that it’s working properly. The best way to do this is to hire a professional to service your unit because the last thing you want is it not to be working properly when you need it most. If you use propane we also suggest getting your tank filled, call our friends at Chattanooga Gas to help.
Secondly, check your insulation! Poor insulation can cause heat to escape your home, making it more difficult and expensive to keep it warm. Inspect your attic, walls, and basement for any signs of inadequate insulation and have it updated if necessary. You may even want to add extra insulation to places like your garage. It is also important to make sure all areas are properly sealed to prevent drafts. Be sure to check doors and windows. You also want to check places like the attic and crawlspace to prevent not only heat escaping, but critters from getting in.
Lastly, we know that with winter comes ice and freezing so be sure to check your water lines. Knowing where your shut off valve is and covering your hose beds with insulation covers can make a huge difference. It’s also a good idea to keep extra blankets, flashlights, and batteries on hand in case of power outages.
